The company had initially been screening development options entailing either a semi-submersible production unit or subsea tieback to the Gjoa platform in the northern North Sea, but earlier this year took on board a leased FPSO as an additional potential concept due to relatively lower costs.
Wintershall has already delayed a concept decision on Skarfjell by about a year as it “sharpens its pencil” to pursue cost improvements to bolster project economics amid low oil prices, according to exploration & production director for Europe and the Middle East, Martin Bachmann.
