Natural gas has been touted by the likes of Statoil as a key transition fuel in the shift away from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy given the long lead time and heavy investments required before the latter can generate significant supplies.
However, Wintershall chief executive Mario Mehren said he “does not see this happening in practice” as gas production remains squeezed by heavy state subsidies both on coal and renewables.
