OPINION: Recent deals between oil and gas companies and Indigenous organisations should not overshadow the toll on Indigenous communities from past conflicts.

Decisions by Enbridge and Cenovus, among other companies, have made progress in including Indigenous communities in ownership and decision-making within the oil and gas industry, a respectful show of alliance with Indigenous groups.

While these efforts to support Indigenous ownership and representation are great steps towards repairing the tumultuous history of energy development on Indigenous lands, they cannot erase damage that has already been done.
