OPINION: By the end of this week, military forces from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are due to join Rwanda troops on the ground in Mozambique’s Islamist-riven province of Cabo Delgado.

President Filipe Nyusi, by allowing foreign soldiers to deploy to Mozambique, has crossed the Rubicon, having previously been extremely reluctant on direct overseas intervention to tackle an insurgency in Cabo Delgado that has created 800,000 refugees and led to TotalEnergies mothballing its $20 billion liquefied natural gas project.
