OPINION: The planned return of a Siemens Energy turbine from Canada to a Russian pumping facility that feeds gas into Gazprom’s Nord Stream 1 pipeline has become the latest test of Western unity in the struggle with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

Despite protests from allies in Kiev, Canada has answered a German plea and issued an exception from its own sanctions to return the overhauled turbine to Russia.

German authorities apparently hope that the the turbine may boost Russian gas supplies to the country after a recent 60% drop in Nord Stream deliveries.
