OPINION: Sultan Ahmed al Jaber, chief executive of the oil producer Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), used his speaker's slot at the recent Adipec conference to lobby for massive investments in the global oil and gas sector.

His address surprised the leaders of some of the largest energy companies, coming so soon after a very different message was delivered at the conclusion of the COP 26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Al Jaber, who also happens to be the United Arab Emitates’ special envoy for climate change, said in an emotional speech that the world needs $600 billion worth of oil and gas investments annually through 2030, “just to keep up with expected [global] demand”.
