Malaysian oilfield services trailblazer Sapura Energy is trying to dig itself out of a very large financial hole that was created long before the company’s chief executive Anuar Taib arrived.

Anuar came to Sapura with an impressive pedigree, having served as chief executive of Malaysia's national upstream company, Petronas Carigali, following a long career with Shell in which he became Shell Malaysia’s chairman.

He replaced Sapura’s founding chief executive Shahril Shamsuddin, who during his 25 years of leadership developed Sapura into a global oilfield services company.
