Kuwait’s Haitham Al-Ghais, an industry veteran with decades of experience in the oil and gas sector, has been named as the new Secretary General of Opec.

Al-Ghais was voted as the new Opec chief in a special conference of the organisation on 3 January.

“The conference decided by acclamation to appoint Haitham Al-Ghais of Kuwait as Secretary General of the organisation, with effect from 1 August 2022, for a period of three years,” Opec said on Monday.

Al-Ghais, a known face of Kuwait’s oil and gas industry, has served with state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and was the nation’s Opec Governor from 2017 until last year.
