When Ingvild Smines Tybring-Gjedde, the chief executive and founder of Norwegian clean energy solutions provider Earth, Wind & Power, describes a near-vertical ascent in her early career, she is speaking quite literally.

In the 1990s, she worked as a professional climber and instructor for the Norwegian Military Academy, schooling officers of the Norwegian Army in leadership, rescue techniques and safety.

These climbing and abseiling skills also introduced Tybring-Gjedde to Norway's oil and gas sector, which needed to train offshore personnel to conduct inspection and maintenance operations on the giant oil and gas platforms on the country’s continental shelf.
