Canada’s federal government will appeal a decision made by a court this week which found environmental legislation to be unconstitutional because it deprived Alberta of the ability to exploit its oil and gas resources as it sees fit.

The Impact Assessment Act (IAA) became law in 2019 and is the foundation legislation under which all major Canadian infrastructure projects — including Equinor’s Bay du Nord oil development offshore Newfoundland which was approved last month — have been assessed.
