Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden has called on Europe to focus on energy conservation efforts to reduce its withdrawal symptoms from rapidly eliminating Russian oil and gas imports.

European leaders are currently looking to liquefied natural gas and renewables to help replace Russian gas supplies after the Ukraine invasion, while fresh sources of oil are being established.

"They realise it's very tough to go cold turkey on Russian crude oil, but even more so on Russian gas," van Beurden told analysts in its first quarter conference call.
