The head of a key opposition party in Mozambique has called on the government to declare a state of war in Cabo Delgado province where an Islamist insurgency is under way.

Daviz Simango, president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third largest party in Mozambique after Renamo and the ruling Frelimo party, claimed such a declaration would help mobilise international action to help the government tackle the Islamist groups and boost aid to the province’s civilian population.
