French energy giant TotalEnergies officially departed Myanmar on 20 July after 30 years’ operatorship of the flagship producing Yadana offshore gas field against a backdrop of human rights abuses following the military again seizing power last February.

More than 2120 people have been killed and almost 12,000 detained over the past 17 months in Myanmar, according to the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners. The unelected military junta last week executed four nationals — a former lawmaker, a democracy activist and two other political prisoners — the nation’s first executions in almost 50 years.
