The United Nations and the Dutch government are pushing this week to raise $80 million to dismantle a decaying floating storage and offloading vessel offshore Yemen, potentially heading off a devastating spill of more than 1 million barrels of crude.
A donor conference scheduled for 11 May in the Hague hopes to raise the money needed to offload oil from the Safer FSO before the risk of a spill increases with the arrival of turbulent fall weather off Yemen’s Red Sea coast, where the vessel is moored.
