Concerns are mounting in Mozambique over the government’s handling of security in the northern town of Mocimbao da Praia, a strategic location in Cabo Delgado province where French supermajor Total is building liquefaction facilities at Afungi to serve its Mozambique LNG project.

Afungi will also host the Rovuma LNG project for which operator ExxonMobil this week chose to delay the final investment decision, citing the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit global energy demand. Before this week, sanction had been expected this year.
