Mozambique’s government has created a dedicated agency in an effort to help address an Islamist insurgency in Cabo Delgado province, where more than 900 people have been killed since October 2017.

The move came as dissidents from the Renamo opposition party carried out attacks on vehicles near their operations base in Gorongosa, central Mozambique.

The Northern Integrated Development Agency (ADIN) aims to tackle the long-lived inequalities that exist between northern Mozambique and other parts of the country and will cover Niassa and Nampula provinces as well as Cabo Delgado.
