Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are moving ahead with development of the disputed Durra offshore gas field in the Persian Gulf, according to Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.

The move is likely to escalate tensions in the Middle East, with Iran also asserting its right over the giant resource, which it refers to as Arash.

The field is located in the shared neutral zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and also extends into Iranian waters.

Prince Abdulaziz said on Monday that development of the field is moving ahead and added: “We made a public statement encouraging Iran to come to the negotiating table.”
