Somaliland is set to seek energy investment from Taiwan after the pair cemented diplomatic ties this week.

The self-declared state in the Horn of Africa will look for investment from Taiwan in the coal mining, oil and gas sectors as "there is huge potential for the two countries to explore common interests,” according to Somaliland’s chief representative in Taipei, Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud.

In a ceremony this week to mark the opening of Somaliland’s embassy in Taiwan, following the establishment in January of diplomatic relations, Mohamoud specified oil exploration as one key area of collaboration.
