Security forces in Myanmar killed at least eight people last weekend as protests across the country, including in the commercial hub Yangon, ratcheted up again after days of dwindling numbers at pro-democracy demonstrations.

Thousands of people in towns and cities across Myanmar joined the protests on Sunday calling for “the Global Myanmar Spring Revolution”.

Rallies in support of the anti-coup protests also took place outside the nation, while Pope Francis called for peace.

“Shake the world with the voice of Myanmar people’s unity,” the organisers said in a statement as reported by Al Jazeera.
