The US will assist Senegal in implementing its gas distribution strategy to maximise domestic use of the country’s natural gas resources by lowering electricity costs, according to the director general of Senegal’s Sovereign Fund for Strategic Investments (FONSIS), Demba Diallo.

The United States Trade & Development Agency (USTDA) will grant $1.2 million to the Sovereign Fund to study options ahead of construction by the Senegal Gas Network (SGN) of a gas pipeline network.

SGN was jointly created in February 2020 by FONSIS, the state-owned oil company Petrosen and the national electricity utility Senelec to facilitate gas transportation from production sites to power plants and centres of industrial consumption.
