Islamist insurgents in Cabo Delgado will continue their attacks and may soon target the Afungi liquefied natural gas construction site, claimed a security expert familiar with southern Africa.

Jasmine Opperman, Africa analyst at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, said the insurgents “will keep on with these attacks and I’m afraid the next ones will be foreigners and the liquefied natural gas sector.”

ExxonMobil, whose Rovuma LNG facilities will be built at Afungi, said in a statement emailed to Upstream: “We continue to monitor security developments and work closely with the government regarding appropriate safeguards to protect people, operations and facilities.
