Ecuador state-owned oil company Petroecuador has started drilling the first of 25 wells planned in the country’s Sacha onshore field in an attempt to increase production from the area.

Located in the Orellana province, Sacha is currently producing approximately 65,000 barrels per day of oil.

The programme calls for the drilling of four wells this year and an additional 21 next year, which is expected to lift output from Sacha by another 20,000 bpd by the end of 2022.

“We intend to incorporate possible and probable reserves to the Ecuadorian oil production from the Hollin, Napo U, Napo T and Basal Tena reservoirs,” said Petroecuador general manager Pablo Luna.

Sacha is estimated to hold about 367.8 million barrels of oil in proven, probable and possible reserves.
