Hurricane Laura in the US Gulf Coast has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm as it slowly makes its way toward the Louisiana-Texas border, with expectations for landfall Wednesday night and early into Thursday morning.

As of 1 pm local time, the US National Hurricane Center said the hurricane was about 200 miles south-east of Port Arthur, Texas. The storm has clocked maximum sustained winds of 140 mph and is traveling at about 16 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend out by up to 70 miles from the eye of the storm, with tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 175 miles.
