A marine growth-encrusted remotely operated vehicle has been lifted from the depths of Lake Michigan, eight years and several failed rescue attempts after it got stuck during a shipwreck investigation.

The unidentified operator of the Seamor Legacy 300T ROV — described by manufacturer Seamor Marine as a “shipwreck hunter” — had been examining the wreck of the Senator, which went down in 1929.

The ROV got hopelessly tangled in the ship’s copper sounder line and had to be abandoned at a depth of 134 metres.
