The Transocean drillship Deepwater Thalassa has started its journey from the US Gulf of Mexico to Colombia as European supermajor Shell prepares to appraise a potentially large natural gas discovery in the Andean nation.

Shell has the seventh-generation drilling rig on hire for a dayrate of $475,000 in a long-term 10-year charter due to expire in February 2026.

The company intends to employ the Deepwater Thalassa to spud the Gorgon-2 well in Block COL-5, one of three offshore permits in Colombia the company acquired with a 50% operating stake a year ago.
