Mozambique will beef up security at the Afungi liquefied natural gas construction site in restive Cabo Delgado province, where Total was forced to evacuate workers this month after Islamist insurgent attacks within a few kilometres of the massive complex.

Upstream was told by Total that chief executive Patrick Pouyanne held a meeting in the capital, Maputo, on 18 January with President Filipe Nyusi and key ministers at which they discussed how best to protect the Afungi site, home to the $23 billion Mozambique LNG project.
