The search is on for an oil worker who disappeared on Sunday from an offshore platform in the Caspian Sea operated by Azerbaijan's state giant Socar.

According to the country's Emergency Ministry, Elshan Kazimov — born in 1975 — went missing from the N 1100 platform on the Pirallahi Deniz oilfield.

“Co-workers discovered that he went missing at the end of a shift around 7pm (local time). The last time he was seen was mid-day doing well measurements,” Socar said.

Kazimov's jacket, boots and a mobile phone were later discovered in his room.

The Emergency Ministry has organised a search party using a helicopter and divers.
