Texas has been awarded an initial grant of $25 million from the US federal government to begin work on plugging an estimated 800 orphaned oil and gas wells in the state.

The money comes from the infrastructure bill signed into law in 2021, which allocated a total of $4.7 billion to plugging orphaned wells across the country.

A total of $1.15 billion of that amount is to be allocated during the 2022 fiscal year to states to plug and remediate orphaned wells.
