Block L covers 2253 square kilometres in Brunei Muara district and parts of Tutong and Temburong districts, while the adjacent 3011-square-kilometre Block M is located in the southern part of Belait district.

Large swathes of the acreage remain unexplored, although more than 600,000 barrels of crude was produced between 1955 and 1962 from the Jerudong oilfield in Block L.

Exploration in Block M began in the early 20th century and there was limited oil output in the 1920s from the Belait field.
