China has launched a new shale gas pilot project in the Sichuan basin amid its latest effort to boost shale gas development in order to meet surging gas demand, writes Xu Yihe.

The Overall Development Plan (ODP) for shale gas in the southern region of Sichuan basin jointly worked out by the Ministry of Land & Resources (MLR), the Sichuan provincial government, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Sinopec involves developing deposits in seven cities — Neijiang, Zigong, Yibin, Luzhou, Leshan, Ziyang and Meishan — with a total land mass of 46,100 square kilometres.
