Attempts in the mid-1990s to check the loss of land by rehabilitating mangrove nurseries came to nothing as additional spills finally wrecked the ecology, destroying 18 hectares of fish farms and cashew plantations in Agbachinchama, a once-thriving settlement near Ikuru township. Farmers like Humphrey Ibiariko have no choice but to try to revive these nurseries. He must travel miles for fresh water since the local well that once served the departed community remains unusable.
