The US rig count climbed by another five units in the latest week to reach 1008, up by as much as 161 from the tally reported in the same report by service giant Baker Hughes this time last year.
The count of rigs exploring for oil was up by seven for the week to 815, a number that has gained substantially over the year-ago figure of 683.
