Federal regulators are expected to release a final rule easing restrictions on the development of small-scale liquefied natural gas facilities in the US "in the near future", writes Caroline Evans.

Rob Smith, assistant deputy secretary for oil and gas at the US Department of Energy (DoE) said last week that the agency plans to issue a final rule soon.

The proposal, which was unveiled in September last year, would allow the DOE to waive a public interest review and immediately approve certain applications to export to countries with which the US does not have a free trade agreement (FTA).
