Malaysia goes to the polls on 9 May, a general election that will determine the fate of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and incumbent Prime Minister Najib Razak, writes Amanda Battersby.

BN lost its historic significant majority a decade ago and then the opposition won the popular vote in the most recent 2013 polls.

Najib says he is expecting a better result in the upcoming general election, which will pit BN against the opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan, led by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.
