Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the two parties, the US supermajor will supply up to 20 million cubic feet per day of gas into the domestic market for 20 years. Papua New Guinea currently has no domestic gas-to-electricity capacity, but the government is desperate for this to change.
A portion of the gas supplied will enable the ExxonMobil-led PNG LNG project to provide up to 25 megawatts of electrical power, or about 20% of Port Moresby’s current generation capacity, for an interim period.
