It marks the go-ahead for the largest new offshore development in the UK in more than a decade, with Statoil aiming to exploit more than 250 million barrels of resources at the field that is set for start-up in 2017.
Statoil has also dished out contract awards worth a total of £1.2 billion for the topsides and steel jacket for the production, drilling and quarters platform that will be used on Mariner, contingent on final approval of the field development plan by UK authorities.
