The layoffs began early last week as up to 200 full-time employees and between 50 and 100 contractors were told there was not enough work in the oil sands department to go around.

Petro-Canada, led by chief executive Ron Brenneman, has struggled to find work for its employees or move them to other departments since it announced it was deferring its investment decision on the Fort Hills oil sands project in north-east Alberta, Canada.
