China and the Philippines have signed an agreement to carry out joint oil and gas exploration and development in disputed waters of the South China Sea, setting aside their differences over sovereignty in the region.
The agreement did not identify specific areas for joint exploration or details of exploration programmes that are envisaged, but the memorandum of understanding released by the Philippines government this week said the co-operation between the two countries will be in “relevant maritime areas”.
