The research is also intended to improve understanding and responses to any future oil spill.
The project is a collaboration between the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI), the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and UK supermajor BP.
It will take a whole-of-ecosystem approach, involving 100 scientific and technical staff and about 15 PhD students, working on 18 inter-related projects.
