The well is being drilled using the drillship Deepsea Metro 1.
Joint venture partner Pancontinental Oil & Gas said the well is expected to take 50 to 60 days to drill.
It said extensive wireline logging and pressure and fluid sampling are planned for the well.
The Sunbird-1 will be plugged and abandoned regardless of the outcome, but Pancontinental said the JV planned to leave the well in a condition that would allow re-entry later.
