Claims that the company provided inducements, hospitality and gifts to Chinese and other foreign officials in the years leading up to the 2008 games are being scrutinised by the US Department of Justice and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), according to a report by the Australian Financial Review.
The newspaper said between 2000 and 2008, BHP spent millions of dollars on a major Olympics sponsorship deal and hospitality package involving more than 170 VIPs, including senior government officials and Chinese steel and mineral company chief executives.
