The Bob Dudley-led supermajor is to drill about 300 wells over a 15-year period at the field in Block 61.
Construction at the field is set to begin next year with first gas targeted for 2017.
BP is to be operator with state-owned Oman Oil Company Exploration & Production intending to take a 40% stake in the block.
The full field development cost is $16 billion, which includes appraisal and early well test work already carried out.
