The UK supermajor says it has learned innumerable lessons from the blowout of its Macondo well, which killed 11 people and sunk a drilling rig.

Oil spewed from the ruptured well for weeks after the blowout as operator BP struggled to stanch the flow, leading to the worst offshore oil spill in US history.

By the end of 2010, BP had begun development of its own capping system to help avert another such disaster.
