Chief executive Simon Thomson admitted the probe had failed to encounter the target reservoirs but said the probe was only the first in a multi-well campaign and that it had confirmed a deep-water petroleum system.
London-listed Cairn said the FD-1 probe, spud in late October, was drilled by the semi-submersible Cajun Express in 1500 metres of water to a total depth of 5255 metres.
