Systems to produce from reservoirs in the region must perform in environments that are pristine, harsh and constantly changing, Arun Duggal, director of research and development at US mooring engineering outfit Sofec, said in Houston on Wednesday.
But there is a prize: The Arctic is estimated to contain about 25% of the world's undiscovered hydrocarbons.
"It comes down to the ice, cold temperature, remote location, lack of infrastructure," Duggal told the Houston Shipping & Offshore conference, which is put on by the city's Norwegian, Brazilian and South Korean consulates.
