Remi Eriksen, chief executive of DNV Maritime and Oil & Gas, explains that barrier management involves first thinking through what can go wrong in any given oilfield operation, and then identifying which barriers can be put in place to prevent an accident from happening or to reduce the impact of a potential accident.
“The thing with barrier management is it’s very concrete, so when you’ve defined the barrier you can actually monitor the barrier in operation,” Eriksen said, adding that this helps to ascertain whether the operator has proper control of the given operation.
