Empire drilled two wells on the extension, both producing oil with little water encountered in the formations.
The company expects the well to be commercially successful, based on log data taken from the well.
Hydraulic fracturing of the wells is expected to start within the next 10 days and a drilling programme will then be put in place once the results are known.
