Eni has been handed operatorship and a 100% stake in Block 9 off the country, it said on Monday.
The block, also known as Shorouk Offshore Block, covers about 3765 square kilometres and sits in water depths of between 1400 and 1800 metres.
Many oil companies snubbed the latest round, with only large players with existing operations in the country, such as UK supermajor BP, Italy’s Eni and Edison applying, along with some smaller companies.
