The deal, announced on Wednesday in an apparent riposte to a similar transaction by rival Rosneft, would give the pair Eni’s 60% stake in the Arctic Russia joint venture, which in turn owns 49% of SeverEnergia.

It follows state-owned Rosneft’s recent $1.8 billion acquisition of Italian utility Enel’s 40% stake in the joint venture to give it a 19.6% stake in SeverEnergia.
