The cash-strapped East European country has tried for the past two years without success to secure a discount on present historically high prices being paid for Russian gas imports as it faces a huge budget deficit this year of 38.8 billion hryvna ($4.7 billion).

Ukraine’s Energy & Coal Minister Yury Boiko last week held talks with Gazprom executive chairman Alexei Miller to discuss uninterrupted supplies through the transit country – vital for onward exports to Europe - during the winter months.

It
